John Issac - FORMS

These 'blobs'  have a really similar representation of shape as what I was looking at creating in my pieces with expanding foam. Looking into the 'bulgyness' of the flesh. These have a more contained aspect to the almost random sculptural pieces I was creating. Although in a visual sense I can see a strong influences from him.

This is also similar with Sarah Lucas' work as she creates more conceptual sculptures using a similar fleshy bulge.

Although Sarah has more a relationship to the female body, using domesticated products,

Setting up the exhibition space

Experimenting with different places to put my work. Also as there's lot of work in a small space, a lot of floor work.

Hans bellmer

The shapes of my sculpture sort of reminded me of some of Hans Bellmers work, who I've previously looked at.

This has some of similar shapes which have a disfigured element.

Possible exhibition pieces?

I created these sculptures which almost appear likes growths. These were made using expanding foam so they did infact grow! I decided to do shapes which focus on form, shapes and the colour - which I spray painted in skin colours.

The back of the expanding foam also was pushing through the wire creating a pressured appearance on the back. I was hoping to try and display these somewhere so you'd be able to get a glimpse of the back too. Although they would have to make sure they don't obstruct anyone - as the wired edges are sharp. So I was thinking of just having them raised slightly off of the wall so it enables the viewer to peak behind to try and discover the material and making technique.

Experiment.

This morning I decided to experiment with the use of expanding foam (which I had briefly used last year). The foam gave me a chance to losen up with appearance and focus on the material. Rather than me having a designed outcome it gave me a chance to be more playful as I was sure on how it would come out. I used a sheet of chicken wire to keep the pieces together as a sculptural piece.

I was also spray painting them a similar style to the wax. As to me it looked too much like food before I spray painted it also then it focuses on the shape and tones of the sculpture.

Today we met up at the space for the first time. The space was bigger than I thought it had be and although I had some ideas of what I wanted to show - I wanted to wait until I had seen the space to gain some inpiration from the space. Rather than having something I had already made recently. Although I do still have a couple of pieces to fall back on if my pieces don't work during this week.
I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get a cold from working in this space. The snow doesn't help. I keep falling over :(

Looking into film pieces, I was looking at Yoko Ono's cut piece.
Where she invited the audience members to cut pieces of her clothing off, this is the sort of concept I'm looking at almost suffering for the artwork. By asking others to do things to her, pushing boundaries between the performer and the audience. This brought her back to her natural state and took away her identity throughout clothes.

A more prime example of this would be Marina Abramovic's RHYTHM 0, 1974, where she placed different items on the table infront of her, and invited the audience to come up and pick any weapon and do anything to her. This was opening up a entire different aspect to performance art, as she put items such as knifes, a gun and other items which could cause her pain or pleasure. She put herself on display for people to do anything they wanted to her. A man was going to shoot her, until someone else stopped him. This showed how as a 'performer' she was treated differently to how she wouldve usually been treated. The viewers/participators lost there morals and acted in ways they wouldn't usually. Putting herself through pain and suffering to discover the different relationship between performer and audience.

edit 1.

I recently created this video/performative piece involving me breaking an egg over my eyes. I was looking at the impact of age and time symbolising through the egg breaking.
Having an aspect of suffering for my own work and experiencing the process to a different level than my other work, as I've never really worked in film before. This almost has a beauty rictual implication - especially as it actually made my skin feel soft. I was looking into developing the idea of 'suffering for beauty', looking into different myths there are about processes which supposedly enhance our appearance.

Having the video in black and white does make it a little difficult to tell that they are actually eggs. Although in the colour version it seemed a little artificial, also I kind of like the fact its slightly obscured

Some different wax experiements

Mixing two colours worked effectively although I think these were too contrasty. Also it is pretty fragile as they aren't properly intwined together.

Although I used the same process for each of these with the water, because its done to chance they all come out different. The way I pour it, the amount of wax and the shape of the bowl are all effecting factors. Its just  a trial and error thing really. Some come out nicer than others.
I did actually kind of like the more subtle ones, as it has more natural movement compared to some of the clusters.

I looked at blending different colours by putting spray paint on top of the wax. So rather than having one entier colour I was able to blend the colours. This also shows the movement of the water and the shapes through the tones. This resembles the human body [flesh] and also has a relationship to food in way. ( reminds me of tutti fruitie)
I'm not sure why but a lot of my art work tends to have tendencies of me wanting to eat them, maybe because of the colour of the material. its odd.

WORKSHOP

Today we were asked to bring objects in for a casting workshop. Although I didn't fully understand and thought we were making cast of objects not imprints so my objects wasn't really appropriate :/. Although this did give me a chance to experiment with the different materials and find processes to engage with.

I was looking at messing around with plaster, although the only 'successful' piece I got was from using the gloves to create a hand cast 'need a hand'. Although this was more of an experiment with the material rather than the outcome.

Wax was more of a material which I found a good connection with. I looked at created natural forms by pouring the wax into the water.  When the pot was a small pot, it constrained the wax and had a pressured effect. Although I wasn't too sure on the colouring of the wax. I will have to try out different pieces.
