Henri Bergson, Matter and Memory
Although I only read the introduction of Matter and memory I still found it a really difficult read.
Bergson ' we have been educed to respond to the world' The human has spaces to store memory and therefore can chose a reaction - depending on past experiences (of reading/actions/etc), which help us to understand future experiences.
For Bergson the image is not infact the object and is not quiet the representation of the object in ones mind. (like a memory of a memory)
Perception is completely different to memory - although he believes theres not enough seperation in idealism and realism. (ie Mental images (memories) and actual images (photographs).
Although images are a good way of understanding the world it doesn't mean that we have full understanding of it. This is because the individual can only perceive a part of it at one time - so we are unable to have pure perception(perception all at onces). Pure perception is a way of understanding something all at once and understand the limits of perception.
We actually screen out what we don't need to see ('the necessary poverty of perception'). So in his eyes, perception of the moment never really happens - we don't see the world as it is now, we see it through our past actions.
Bergson and art take in consideration for the reconfiguration reality on different levels.

henry tonks
Henry Tonks work focuses on the reconstructive surgery during the war. Showing the before and afterwards - he would take photographs before the operations and after. These were so powerful showing the skill and impact of the surgery then.
This is something which I've been looking into in an art retrospective, looking at deconstructing pieces and reconstructing them together again.

What can you do with a piece of string?
In our session with Lucy, we were all given a piece of string - the same length, which we'd use to create a piece to exhibited at the end of the session. We could still infact add anything to the string and use it in anyway. Although I found this challenging to think of something to create with a metre of string, I went in search of different materials in my studio to see what I could combine with the string to create a piece.
Although I had previously done site specific pieces, which I had created on the day for the space - in the space. This was a different way to look at creating a exhibition,.. looking at all starting off with the same material but seeing how we can use it and develop it differently.
I decided to cut up my piece of string and combine the string with brown tape. This separated the pieces up and created a x-ray like effect. Focusing on the form and movement of the string.
